iCubeSat

Dear Colleague,

As you may be aware, for the last twenty years, the physics community has shared unpublished journal manuscripts (preprints) through the Los Alamos National Lab, and later Cornell-hosted, website arXiv.org. The site now contains nearly 700,000 full text preprints, and has contributed immeasurably to the free exchange of ideas that is essential to all scientific and engineering communities. The CubeSat community’s traditions of inclusivity and open collaboration have played a vital role in the success of the CubeSat platform. Open access to publication preprints would provide CubeSat developers worldwide with early and free access to the information they need to build the best possible instruments for science and technology demonstration.

In order to facilitate this free exchange of information, we are working with arXiv to found a new aerospace section. The arXiv organizers are willing to add this new section if they receive letters of support from prominent members of the field.

As such, we’d like to invite you to write such a letter in support of the overall concept and to indicate you and/or your group’s willingness to submit any suitable abstracts and paper preprints to an aerospace section of arXiv. The letter should be addressed to:

As organizers of iCubeSat, the 1st Interplanetary CubeSat Workshop, we have committed to support this long-term effort by asking all those participating to consider submitting their work. We are also coordinating the collection of letters of support, and if you wish to support this effort, we would be grateful if you would send your letter to Rebecca Jensen-Clem and Michael Johnson at arXiv@iCubeSat.org

We will then collate the letters and forward them to arXiv in a single block as evidence of community support for the concept. Professor Sara Seager from MIT has kindly allowed us to distribute her letter of support as a template document here.
